Finding privacy may be a small issue when compared to the love and support, the guidance from the elders we get from a joint family is unmatchable. Yes privacy might be an issue but I am sure it can be sorted out.

I prefer western culture in this part. Staying together without having respect or liking each other make no sense. It's better to stay separately and visit each other some times. This will give privacy as well as respect to both the parties. It may sound weird, but it's really true.
In western culture the mother in law doesn't even come to help at the time of delivery nor if you are sick or in need of them. They don't help their kids if financial support is needed. Indian culture has its own beauty with some pros and cons.
