Vedanga Name Meaning

The name Vedanga is of Sanskrit origin and is composed of two elements: "Veda," meaning "knowledge" or "sacred text," and "Anga," which translates to "limb" or "part." Combined, Vedanga implies "limb of the Vedas" or "part of the sacred texts."

In ancient Hinduism, the Vedangas were considered auxiliary disciplines that developed to aid the study and understanding of the Vedas (the ancient Hindu scriptures). It is believed that these fields of knowledge were composed as early as the 6th century BCE. The Vedangas consist of six principal limbs, which include phonetics (Shiksha), ritual (Kalpa), grammar (Vyakarana), etymology (Nirukta), meter (Chandas), and astronomy (Jyotisha). These disciplines were designed to complement and provide guidance for the accurate recitation, interpretation, and implementation of the Vedic texts.
