I had read somewhere, and now I agree, that of all the things my hands have ever held, the best has been those little fingers and delicate toes, and with that, you start feeling a new sense of responsibility, while also realising how well you can manage on very little sleep and very little time to spend on your once-favourite things.
Yes, your sleep flies out of the window immediately, as your little one enters the nursery of your home, which you design and redesign just to make sure that nothing is overlooked or uncomfortable in there. With that, what also flies away on the wings of late night cries and early morning playtime with your newborn, is all the activities you used to do in your spare time.
But, trust me, everything seems worth it when that little pirate of yours gives you that million dollar smile, and if it’s your lucky day, you may even get to hear a chuckle or two! All your tiredness vanishes away, and all the hustle suddenly feels worthwhile, when you see those little lips curl into a smile.
It’s also very soon that you begin to realise and also accept that the only motherhood mantra that can guide you through those initial months of hustle is to hit the bed when your baby decides to take a nap! Yes, that’s the only way you can survive (apart from those frequent cups of coffee you suddenly say ‘Hello’ to after refraining from caffeine during the pregnancy days!). And, whenever you feel like doing those random doodles, or anything that helps you relax (in fact, you should be doing them every now and then), you can manage by letting some other member of your family take over the role of Mommy from you for some time.
And, of course, whenever you feel tired, or low on energy, or whenever you feel the urge to steal some time to aimlessly surf the Web or read a book or listen to songs on high volume while driving down the city lanes, there is something that I always remind myself: you have been your daddy’s pampered daughter, you have been your husband’s beloved wife, and now, you have just begun this journey of being an amazing mother for your newborn. You will learn something new every day. You will learn to find the calm in what seems like chaos. You will learn to have your own set of rules to bring up your child, and you will eventually learn to be his companion and friend, his partner in crime, and his teacher for life.
So, whenever in doubt, just recall those beautiful moments of seeing your little one for the first time. Whenever you are feeling low on energy, just remind yourself that you can and you will face this beautiful new life with your best foot forward. And, whenever you feel that a meltdown is around the corner, just put on your favourite dress, look at yourself in the mirror, and scream, “I AM and I WILL BE the BEST MOTHER my child can have!”
