A. Sudden shivering or shaking in a 3-year-old can be caused by several factors, ranging from mild to serious. Here are the most common reasons and what you can do: Possible Causes 1. Fever or Chills: Shivering can be a sign of a rising fever or the body trying to regulate its temperature. Check for fever using a thermometer. 2. Cold Environment: If your baby was exposed to a cold environment or is underdressed, shivering could be due to cold. 3. Fear or Anxiety: Sudden shattering or trembling could be a response to fear, excitement, or stress. 4. Low Blood Sugar: If your child hasn’t eaten for a while, low blood sugar levels could cause shivering. 5. Infection: Sometimes, infections like urinary tract infections (UTIs) or other illnesses can trigger chills. 6. Neurological Issue (Rare): If accompanied by jerky movements or loss of consciousness, it could indicate seizures or another neurological issue. What You Can Do 1. Check Temperature: If your baby has a fever, give paracetamol as per pediatric guidance. Keep them hydrated. 2. Warm Clothing: Ensure your child is warm and comfortable if the environment is cold. 3. Offer Food or Fluids: If your child hasn’t eaten, offer a light snack or sugary drink to stabilize blood sugar. 4. Monitor Symptoms: Watch for other signs like difficulty breathing, rashes, or lethargy. When to See a Doctor If shivering continues for more than a few minutes. If it’s accompanied by fever, vomiting, seizures, or difficulty breathing. If your child appears very weak or unresponsive.
