ExpertDr.Rasika ThosarPaediatric Intensivist8 years agoA. check revieWS. potty training is basically when child is able to sit independenly and is able to tell prior about urination, defecation sensation. holding child on potty, making child to urinate in potty seat is for your convenience, you can start with that. also look for signs such as pausing for a minute, little straining, taking particular position to pass stools or urine. so its easier to start training and to clean up. usually babies urinate after waking up, after feeding. appreciate child, give stickers, stars when child uses potty for encouragement. get help of books cartoons teaching potty training

Janani ViswanathanMom of 2 children8 years agoA. You can go for either potty chair or potty seats (which can be used on top of our regular potty) based on baby's comfort. Some babies may start playing when u use potty chair and may not effectively use them, in that case potty seat will be best, where u can seat the baby and hold. But some babies may be afraid to use potty seats because of the height in that case u can go for potty chairs. So it totally depends on ur baby. Once ur baby can sit with support u can start using them. Every baby is different and hence there is no ideal age for potty training. Some babies are potty trained well before one year of age. But some dont get trained even after five years of age. So it depends. There are several factors you have to keep a check on before starting potty training for ur baby. Your child should be able to grasp the instructions and your child should have awareness and control over his body. You should be ready to take things slowly, ready to face many accidents, be patient, keep on trying, identify child friendly techniques, dont get angry or expect immediate results, encourage the child. Start with simple steps. Make the child to pee once in every hour or two hours as required. Make him use the potty to pee. This will relieve the fear if potty, start only day time training first, when it is successful start night training too and go diaper free . Once in three or four hours wake the kid and make him use the potty. Then slowly encourage the kid to let you know when he wants to pee. Set up a reward system like giving stickers every time he uses potty correctly without making an accident. Once the peeing is all under control then move to pooping. Understand the child's routine of pooping and make him use the potty around the same time. Soon he will learn to let u know when he want to use the potty to poop. There is no predefined age. It's better to teach a physically and mentally mature toddler than pressurising and stressing a very small baby.
