A. Hello, Baby's first semi solid food depends on when you start weaning. Generally, baby starts weaning when she turns six months. But since each baby is different, some show interest as early as 4 months. if you are starting prior to six months, I would recommend to start with rice water and Dal water. This way baby will get a taste who is used to having only milk so far. Gradually, start with semi-solid food. It could be fruits puree or vegetable puree. Again fruits puree is recommended (banana, apple, avacado, pear etc) as fruits have natural sweetener and most likely be enjoyed by babies. You can then proceed to rice and Dal khichdi(mashed/grinded). Slowly you can add vegetables like pumpkin, potato, tomato, peas, beans to khichdi and grind it well. This time is good for porridge also. It could be suji-apple porride or ragi porridge or grinded dal powder porridge. Few things to note: please take special care of when to introduce ghee or nuts to baby. Do not introduce ghee atleast before six months. Also use home made ghee if possible. And start with pinch only as opposed to half /full teaspoon as suggested by few. Best time to introduce nuts is atleats after 8 months. Thanks!

A. you can guve ragi porridge. adjust the consistency as per baby's requirement. any solid or semi solid food can be given only after completion of six months. I would suggest you buy ragi....wash it nicely and dry it thoroughly. After that get it powdered. Seive it nicely and store in a container...preferably in a glass or steel container...not plastic. Take about 1 teaspoon ragi powder and add quarter cup water (boiled and cooled water). Mix it well and then cook this mixture for a few minutes continuously stirring until it comes to a boil. Adjust the consistency as per your requirement.add a little of jaggery or a pinch of salt....or if you think your baby will eat without these also then you can try without adding sugar or salt first.

A. You can Start with Dal or chawal ka pani, after few days start with Fruit purees like apples, pear, avacado, papaya, mashed banana, vegetable puree like carrots, pumpkin, peas, mashed sweet potato or potatoes, pulses, porridge like ragi or oats, veg rice, dal rice, veg kichdi, RASAM rice, steamed idli, home made cereals. Start with easily digestible foods first during day time and then move on to the heavy ones. Also start one food at a time and wait for two to three days to see if it suits your baby and then start something new again. Always follow this two day gap rule between introducing new foods and start any new food only during day time. Also avoid using sugar and salt until the baby is one year old. The babies get the required sugar and salt from all the solid food items , breastmilk or formula they intake. They don't need any additional salt or sugar to be added, extra sugar or salt will not do any good for the baby. Baby will not realise the taste until it is introduced and won't find it blunt as like adults. So baby will accept the blunt taste without salt and sugar until we introduce it. After u cook dal in pressure cooker, mash it along with the water that u used to cook dal, then strain this and give this dal ka pani to baby. Similarly cook rice with excess water. Once the rice is well cooked, mash it with the water present and strain this. Give this chawal ka pani to the baby. Wash the apples, peel the skin, cut it into pieces, steam the apples, cool it down and mash it without lumps. If required u can add some breastmilk or formula to get a good texture.
