A. It's great that you're looking for alternatives to screen time for your baby. Here are some tips to help your 1.7-year-old transition to better sleep habits without relying on breastfeeding or screens: Establish a bedtime routine: Creating a calming, predictable routine signals to your baby that it’s time for sleep. This can include activities like a warm bath, reading a book, or singing a lullaby. Keep the routine consistent to help your baby wind down. Create a comfortable sleep environment: Ensure the room is dark, quiet, and cool. A white noise machine or soft music can also help soothe your baby. Use a transitional object: Introduce a soft toy, blanket, or something your baby associates with comfort. It can help your baby feel secure during bedtime. Gradual weaning: Since you’re planning to stop breastfeeding, you can start by replacing one feeding session at a time with a bottle or cup of water or formula. Slowly reduce breastfeeding sessions so your baby gets used to falling asleep without it. Consistent sleep schedule: Try to put your baby to bed at the same time each night. This helps set an internal clock, making it easier for your baby to fall asleep. Gentle sleep training: If your baby has trouble falling asleep on his own, you can try gentle sleep training techniques like the “Ferber Method” (gradually reducing your presence in the room) or the “Chair Method” (gradually moving further away from the crib each night). Comfort and reassurance: If your baby wakes up during the night, give him comfort by gently patting or soothing him with your voice without picking him up. This will help him learn to self-soothe. With patience and consistency, these methods can help your baby transition smoothly to sleep without breastfeeding or screen time.
