Q.

my son is 4 yrs old. he still sucks his thumb while sleeping. how can I help him get rid of this

A. Thumb sucking in infants is a very normal phenomenon and its called mouthing reflex and nothing to be worried about it just maintain proper hygiene and with time this thing will go . In the toddlers thumb sucking habit is also seen many a times which could be phycological cause and feeling of insecurity or some stress . Just try to make the child comfortable and divert in some activities also spend good time with the child . In extreme case withdrawal can be tried with some solution avaiglable which are bitter like femite lotdion . It needs to be applied locally .

A. Give them an alternate means of comfort Provide your child with an alternate means of coping with some kind words and a few hugs. This will teach them that they do not have to rely on their thumb for comfort. You can also give them a soft toy, a rubber ball, finger puppets, etc., as these items will keep their hands occupied and also distract them from anxiety. This is one of the best and natural ways to stop thumb sucking.
