A. If your 5-month-old daughter is experiencing severe loose motions and has lactose intolerance, here are some steps you can take: 1. Switch to Lactose-Free Formula: If she is not tolerating the current formula, consider switching to a lactose-free formula or a specialized formula designed for infants with lactose intolerance, such as soy-based or extensively hydrolyzed formulas. 2. Hydration: Ensure she stays well-hydrated. Offer small sips of oral rehydration solutions (ORS) as recommended by your pediatrician to prevent dehydration caused by loose motions. 3. Monitor Solid Foods: If you have started introducing solids, be cautious with foods that may contain lactose, such as dairy products. Stick to easy-to-digest foods, like rice cereal, pureed vegetables, or fruits. 4. Consult Your Pediatrician: It’s important to discuss her symptoms with your pediatrician, who may recommend specific dietary changes or treatments to manage her condition. They may also check for any underlying issues that could be causing the diarrhea. 5. Probiotics: Sometimes, probiotics can help improve gut health. Check with your pediatrician if a probiotic supplement is appropriate for her. 6. Keep a Food Diary: Track her food intake and any reactions to help identify any specific triggers. Always consult your healthcare provider before making significant changes to your baby’s diet or if her condition doesn’t improve.
