Q.

My daughter is almost 3 year old and is having cold cough and fever past 4 days. I am giving her mephtal p, levolin and relent plus as suggested by doctor. She is still having fever and yesterday night she started shivering , made her warm by body heat and hot water bag and gave mephtal p, she was ok in 15 mins. Her nose is also blocked, rubbing vicks and giving her frequent steam but is not helping. Please help

A. from the medications you are been given and from your history it appears that the child is having viral infection with cough and cold. normally viral infections may persist for 3 days to 6 days. in between these days when you give the medicine the fever subsides and as soon as the effect of medicine weans of fever comes again. for fever always start with paracetamol and if fever doesn't subside after 2 hours of paracetamol then only give meftal p. after giving paracetamol sponge the whole body with regular water. give plenty of water to drink to maintain hydration. paracetamol can be maximum given 4 times per day. meftal p can be given maximum of three times per day. kindly follow with your doctor after 3 days of fever to ascertain whether there is need of any antibiotics for any laboratory reports.

A. Hello.. u meftal is advisable only if the temperature is above one or two degrees otherwise it is sufficient to give your child calpol or any paracetamol drops and if after 3 days also there is no improvement is seen better to check with your doctor and see if any additional examination is needed
