POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy5 months agoA. You're right to be concerned, and you're not alone — many parents notice changes in their baby’s stool patterns. At 5 months, if your baby is frequently passing runny stools, it could be due to a few reasons:
Teething – Some babies have looser stools while teething. New foods – If you’ve recently started solids, her tummy might be adjusting. Foremilk-hindmilk imbalance – If breastfeeding and switching breasts too soon, she may be getting more watery milk. Mild infection or tummy bug – If stools are very frequent, watery, and have foul smell or mucus, it could be a viral or bacterial infection. Lactose sensitivity or formula reaction – Sometimes, certain formulas or even breast milk (if mom eats certain foods) may cause tummy upset.
What you can do:
Keep her hydrated (breastfeed more often or give ORS if advised). Watch for signs like fever, vomiting, weight loss, or dehydration (dry mouth, sunken eyes, no tears, fewer wet diapers). Avoid giving solids until stools normalize if you’ve recently introduced them. Consult your pediatrician to rule out infection or intolerance if this continues for more than 2–3 days.
