A. Newborn hiccups are most frequently caused by baby overfeeding, eating too quickly or swallowing a lot of air on case of bottle fed babies. These things can lead to stomach distension. When the stomach distends, it pushes against the diaphragm, which causes it to spasm and it causes hiccups. A doctor should be consulted if a baby frequently gets hiccups. If these hiccups are causing distress to your baby, this can indicate an underlying health condition.
