Cold most of the time is a  viral illness where there could be running nose sneezing along with cough and it needs supportive care along with proper hydration . steam inhalation will also be useful in this .
cough needs to be treated with anti allergic and expectorant bronchodilators or antitussives medicine  which should be used once a proper evaluation by the dujoctor is done and  according to the type of cough its prescribed.
if any t fever is there paracetamol can be given to reduce the temperature and the dose can be repeated again after 6 hours  if required .

No do not put it on the nose rest you can put it onto the chest back neck and throat of your child and even on the feet you would be putting it if you want but you actually cannot put it onto the nose that would be advisable
