Q.

My baby is 5 months old and he constantly puts his fingers in the mouth and keeps chewing them. So much so that he tries to pull my hand and puts my fingers also in his mouth and starts chewing vigorously. Is he about to start teething? If so then how to soothe him? He doesn’t like teethers or soothers in his mouth. I’ve heard much about a homeopathic medication called calcaria during the teething times. Is it a good medicine to give to give to my baby?

A. finger, thumb, hand, things insertion in the oral cavity is very normal at this stage and usually it is due to teething pain the child is experiencing along with inflammation and pain in the gums. just maintain hygiene of the child finger as well as any type of things which goes inside the oral cavity and also try to maintain the hygiene of your finger when you are touching the hands of the child. to decrease the teething pain you can press the gums of the child and if the child is very irritable and crying for pain you can give paracetamol also. it is a self limiting habit and no treatment is required. but if hygiene is not maintained then dirty things going inside the oral cavity can cause infection fever vomiting and loose motions. during teething (pain can start as early as 3 months) there is itching, pain, drooling of saliva, swelling in the gums, oral finger insertion, irritability and crying during the teething process. it will come intermittently for few days to few weeks and then will go away. usually teething pain doesn't come after 2 years of age. with the help of your fingers you can press the gums of the child to decrease the pain as well as you can give a pacifier but it should be clean. you can give a cold cotton cloth to bite and press between the gumss when the child is crying due to pain not resolving then you can give paracetamol which will also help in decreasing the pain. long-term medicine on daily basis (homeopathic /allopathic )s(they are painkiller)are usually not advisable.
