They are better able to comprehend what is said to them and express what they want through words and gestures. They are able to understand directions. They should be able to respond to simple commands and should be fully aware of the names of familiar objects and family members.
What can you do:
Spend a lot of time communicating with the kid. Talk, sing and encourage imitation of sounds and gestures with your kid. Read out stories from story books. Choose soft or board books or picture books that you can point out what the pictures are and have your kid feel the pictures. Later let your kid point to recognizable pictures and try to name them. Talk your way through the day. Point out objects around the house. Keep things simple but never use baby talk. Always use good pronunciation.
