A. For a 17-month-old experiencing a dry cough, especially at night while sleeping, there are several steps you can take to help alleviate the symptoms and promote healing: 1. **Ensure Proper Hydration**: Make sure your child stays well-hydrated by offering water, breast milk, or formula frequently throughout the day. Hydration helps to soothe the throat and thin out mucus. 2. **Use a Humidifier**: Running a cool-mist humidifier in your child's room at night can help moisten the air and ease coughing. This is particularly helpful in dry indoor environments. 3. **Elevate the Head of the Bed**: Keeping your child's head slightly elevated during sleep can reduce postnasal drip and lessen nighttime coughing. 4. **Try Saline Drops**: Saline nasal drops or sprays can help loosen nasal mucus, making it easier for your child to clear their throat and reduce coughing. 5. **Avoid Irritants**: Keep your child away from cigarette smoke, strong odors, and other potential irritants that can exacerbate coughing. 6. **Offer Warm Fluids**: Warm liquids like broth or warm water with honey (if your child is over 1 year old) can provide soothing relief for a dry cough. Note: Honey should not be given to children under 1 year old due to the risk of infant botulism. 7. **Consider Over-the-Counter Medications**: For children older than 1 year, some pediatricians may recommend a children's cough syrup or antihistamine under their guidance. Always consult with your child's pediatrician before giving any medications. 8. **Monitor for Other Symptoms**: Watch for signs such as difficulty breathing, persistent fever, or worsening symptoms, which may indicate a more serious condition requiring medical attention. If your child's dry cough persists or worsens despite these measures, or if you are concerned about their condition, it is essential to seek advice from your pediatrician. They can provide a more specific diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment tailored to your child's needs.
