A. For a light cough in a 5-month-old, here are some gentle steps you can take: 1. Moist Air: Use a cool-mist humidifier in the room where your baby sleeps to add moisture to the air, which can help ease a cough caused by dry air. 2. Keep Hydrated: Continue breastfeeding or formula feeding as usual. Staying well-hydrated helps to thin mucus and relieve a cough. 3. Elevate Head: During naps or nighttime, slightly elevating the head of her crib (without using pillows directly under her head) can help reduce coughing due to post-nasal drip. 4. Saline Drops: If she has nasal congestion, you can use saline drops in her nose and gently suction out mucus with a bulb syringe. This can help clear her nasal passages, which may relieve coughing. 5. Avoid Irritants: Keep her away from smoke, strong perfumes, or other irritants that might worsen the cough. A light cough often resolves on its own within a few days. However, if her cough worsens, is accompanied by fever, difficulty breathing, or signs of distress, consult her pediatrician for further evaluation.
