Postnasal Drip: If your baby has a cold or allergy, mucus can drip down the throat while lying down, triggering a cough. Dry Air: Especially in air-conditioned or heated rooms, dry air can irritate the baby’s throat. Mild Reflux: In some babies, stomach contents may come up slightly when lying down, causing coughing. Allergies or Dust: Dust, pet dander, or even bedding material can cause an allergic cough, especially at night. What You Can Do: Elevate the Head Slightly: Raise the head of the mattress slightly (not with a pillow directly under the head for babies) to reduce postnasal drip or reflux. Use a Humidifier: A cool-mist humidifier in the room can help keep air moist and soothe the throat. Saline Drops: If there is nasal congestion, saline nasal drops before sleep can help clear the nose. Keep the Room Clean: Ensure bedding is dust-free and avoid using strong room fresheners or perfumes. Breastfeed or Offer Water: Depending on the baby’s age, keeping them hydrated helps ease the throat.
If the cough persists for more than a few nights, worsens, or is accompanied by fever, wheezing, or difficulty breathing, consult your pediatrician immediately. Avoid giving cough syrups unless prescribed, especially for babies under 2 years.
