Q.

My baby, 20 months old is suffering from fever since last 3 days. I was giving her calpol 120 for every occurrence of fever, which usually was 6-7 hours. Today being 4 th day, we went to doctor. He suggested to start azithromycin and multivitamins. Since the time I have given her antibiotics she is very drowsy and has developed loose motions too. Is this a side effect of antibiotics?

A. Fever is a response of the body to any kind of infection or any inflammatory process in body so you can give paracetamol in a dose of 15 mg/kg/dose as the first line treatment also this dose can be again repeated after every 5 to 6 hours if again required and you can also do cold ggsponging of the body to reduce fever

A. Yes, antibiotics makes baby drowsy. Fevers due to viruses can last for as little as two to three days and sometime as long as two weeks. A fever caused by a bacterial infection may continue until the child is treated with an antibiotic.
