Q.

My 6 week old baby drinks milk hardly for 5 minute or less. Even if she is awake she doesn’t drink after 5 minutes and maximum time she sleeps while feeding. Wt gain is normal and while awake she plays. Being a mother I get scared why she drinks less milk. Please suggest

A. Dear mum, you should not worry. Feeding pattern varies from baby to baby. Some babies feed for shorter duration and some longer duration. If baby is active, alert and passing urine more than 7 times in 24 hours then feeding is sufficient.

A. Newborns may nurse for up to 20 minutes or longer on one or both breasts. As babies get older and more skilled at breastfeeding, they may take about 5–10 minutes on each side.
