A. It sounds like your baby might be experiencing a problem with swallowing or a reaction to the food, which can be concerning. Here are a few possible reasons and steps you can take: ### Possible Causes: 1. **Gag Reflex**: At 5 months, some babies have a very sensitive gag reflex, which can cause them to vomit when they try to swallow something unfamiliar or with a texture they find challenging. 2. **Oral Aversion**: If your baby has had a negative experience with eating (e.g., choking or pain), they may develop an aversion to swallowing food. 3. **Reflux**: Gastroesophageal reflux can cause discomfort when swallowing, leading to vomiting. Though you mentioned it doesn’t seem to reach the stomach, reflux can still cause this reaction. 4. **Teething Discomfort**: Teething can make the mouth and throat sensitive, causing discomfort during feeding. 5. **Infection or Illness**: Sometimes, a sore throat or an ear infection can make swallowing painful, leading to vomiting. ### What You Can Do: 1. **Stop Forcing Food**: Avoid forcing your baby to eat, as this can worsen the situation and lead to further aversion. 2. **Offer Liquids**: Offer breast milk or formula, which might be easier for your baby to swallow. Make sure your baby stays hydrated. 3. **Check the Texture**: If you’re introducing solids, consider offering very smooth purees or even waiting a little longer before reintroducing solids. 4. **Stay Calm and Observe**: Monitor your baby’s behavior. If your baby seems uncomfortable, irritable, or has other symptoms like fever, it’s important to consult with a doctor. 5. **Consult Your Pediatrician**: Given the difficulty in swallowing and the vomiting, it’s crucial to speak with your pediatrician. They may want to examine your baby for any underlying issues that could be causing the problem, such as reflux, infections, or a structural issue with the throat or esophagus. ### When to Seek Immediate Help: - If your baby is showing signs of distress, dehydration (e.g., dry mouth, no tears when crying, fewer wet diapers), or if the vomiting persists, you should seek medical attention immediately. Your pediatrician can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend the best course of action.
