Q.

My 3.5 month old baby takes breast only for 3 mins per feed and after that starts sucking thumb. Taking it as a hunger cue if I offer breast she is rejecting. She is always sucking thumb so not able to figure out if it's for hunger or soothing. Even at nights though she is hungry she is not crying rather puts her thumb in mouth and pacifies herself. How can I know if my baby is getting enough and is satisfied. How to know if sucking thumb is for comfort or hunger

A. to find whether the child is getting normal milk or not you have to meet the doctor and if the weight gain is more than 600 grams in one month and the per day weight gain is more than 20 grams then the child is getting enough amount of milk and many times just before the teething process such type of thumb sucking is common in children

A. @Pooja. Thank you for the response. But what about feeding being reduced due to it. I have read articles that thumb sucking and reduced hunger or not related but trust me I see a drastic difference in her feeding from the time thumb sucking has started.

A. Makes them feel calmer: Baby thumb sucking is a way for the child to deal with anxiety and stress. It makes them feel calm and helps them deal with stressful situations.https://parenting.firstcry.com/articles/thumb-sucking-in-babies/
