Q.

My 10 month old kid is having pink/red urine for which we got Urine Routine test done which showed RBC as 20-30/hpf, Urine Culture test was negative. Nephrologist asked for all blood tests(CBC, PT, APTT, Vitamin D, Erythrocytes, Serum Compliment Etc.) including full abdomen Ultrasound and everything came normal but his urine still has RBC count when we do Urine Routine weekly test (some test however had 0 count in between also). What should be done now? Is it normal for some kids to pass some RBCs in urine as my kid doesn't have any pain symptoms.

A. it's not normal. follow all the tests . You should get your self or baby evaluated by the doctor in person. That will be necessary and will help in diagnosis and proper treatment. Avoid home remedies in this case .

A. You can go ahead with Ultrasound since our doctors also asked to get it done after 6 months but we continued getting it done in every 2 months. Then only we got to know that the stone was increasing in size. So for your satisfaction you can get it done now also as ultrasound doesn't have any radiations associated with it. Also, repeat the urine routine test every 2 weeks initially and if there are No RBCs then you can have it every other month. Sometimes RBCs are there but we can't see by eyes (called microscopic hematuria) and other type is when you can see red/pink color (Gross hematuria).

A. Usually there should be no RBCs in urine however 3-5 /hpf is not high. But still just for caution get the KUB (Kindey, Ureter, Bladder) ultrasound done to see if everything is fine. My kid was having gross hematuria on and off with RBCs 0 sometimes and even 300/hpf sometimes

A. my daughter had 3-5 hpf rbc was ur child continuously urinating red urine?
Author of questionFather of a 7 yr 7 m old boy5 years ago
A. Yes, my kid recently had a surgery to remove the kidney stone. But workup is still going on to find the reason as to why the stone occured since our family never had any kidney stones. So it is not common to have RBCs in urine. Also, Boys are more prone to have stones than girls. Please contact some good child nephrologist who will suggest some tests to see if there is anything to be concerned about.

A. Please get a KUB ultrasound done first as blood in urine is generally caused by UTIs, kidney stones, calcium cystals in the urine. My kid had a kidney stone which was causing blood in his urine. So consult a child nephrologist at the earliest to diagnose the real cause of hematuria.
