In "ancient" days the use of sugar water was the first available substitute if a mother was not lactating properly and people thought it was an alternative to Collastrum. In today's age the doctors help and give advice on helping with increasing lactation. Otherwise we have a wise variety of powder milks for newborns. So do not indulge in giving sugar water for any reason to a newborn or young baby. Babies need to suckle at the moms beast to encourage milk supply and in the first 4-5 months need nothing but beast milk to keep them healthy and grow.

Rithu.l.AbrahamMom of a 12 yr 5 m old girl9 years agoA. Off course not. You should not give sugar or salt to babies less than 1year old. This includes all forms of sugar ( molasses, palm jaggery, honey etc ). Reason is that babies less than 1yr require less than 1gram of sugar and salt for their body to function and this amount is supplied to them from the food they take. So adding salt or sugar to a baby's diet will result in excess of sugar and salt intake which will harm their kidneys . There is no need to give sugar water because breast milk contains enough sugar and water needed by the infant below 6 months. If you are using formula feeds. Mix the formula exactly as instructed as excess of water can also damage the developing kidneys. You can give sips of water occasionally once the baby is 5months. By 6th month you can give baby water when ever he or she demands.
