A. Hi, Before breastfeeding the baby hand express or pump just until let down and then latch the baby on. In case you have flat or inverted nipple pumping will elongate the nipple and the baby will initiate sucking without nipple shield too. Also ensure that your baby opens his mouth widely to encourage him to take as much breasts tissue into his mouth as possible for a deep latch. If you feel pain when the baby latches then gently unlatch and re latch. Keep patience. in case the baby resists feeding without the nipple shield then start feeding with the shield on. Continue to do this and reduce the amount of time you feed with the shield in place at each session. Breastfeed often and as and when the baby demands. Don't feed when the baby starts crying as latching becomes difficult then. Try different nursing positions to find one that makes baby most comfortable. All the best and take care.
