A. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other health bodies recommend that babies are fed entirely on breast milk for their first six months of life and continue having their mother’s milk alongside other foods – known as complementary foods – until at least the age of two and maximum as long as mother and child wish to go even until age of 5 to 7 years. Weaning is the process of stopping feeding your baby with breast milk. Ideally, the first step towards weaning your baby is introducing complementary foods alongside your breast milk around the age of six months. The weaning process continues until breast milk is completely replaced by other foods and drinks. Whenever you decide to start weaning your child off breast milk, it’s best to do it gradually. Stopping breastfeeding suddenly could put you at risk of engorgement, blocked ducts or mastitis, as well as being an abrupt change for your baby’s digestive and immune systems to cope with. It may also be difficult for you both emotionally. * Replace a feed with meals * Replace feeds with activities or outing * Hand Express if engorged * Day wean first then night wean * Keep the nap time and bed time feeds last to wean

A. Is there any reason to stop breastfeeding early? Breastfeeding is recommended upto 1.5 yrs to 2 yrs or even after that as long as the baby and the mother are comfortable with it. If u plan to wean, Instead of weaning abruptly like applying neem oil or something else the below approach can be stress-free for both the mother and the baby. First try to regularize the Breastfeeding and solid feeding schedule and stop feeding on demand. Then Start weaning slowly. Stop one feed first during day time. Make the child forget it by diverting her with any interesting play or story or take her outside. After stopping that feed for couple of days, stop oned more feed. Slowly you will get to a place where you will be giving only night feed. Then you should start weaning the night feed. Take it slowly. By this way ur milk supply will also gradually decrease as milk secretion is based on demand.
