A. To help remove old or persistent cough from your baby, here are some steps you can take:
Hydration: Make sure your baby is drinking plenty of fluids (water, breast milk, or formula). Hydration helps thin mucus, making it easier for the baby to clear it from the chest and throat.
Use a Humidifier: Keep a humidifier in your baby’s room to add moisture to the air. This can help soothe the throat and loosen mucus, making it easier to cough up.
Saline Drops or Spray: Use saline nasal drops or spray to clear any congestion in your baby’s nose. This can help reduce post-nasal drip, which might be triggering the cough.
Warm Compress: A warm compress on the chest can help soothe a tight chest and clear mucus. Always ensure it's not too hot for the baby.
Honey (for babies above 1 year): If your baby is over 1 year old, honey can help soothe a cough. Give a small spoonful before bedtime, but never give honey to babies under 1 year due to the risk of botulism.
Chest Rubs (for babies over 3 months): Some baby-safe chest rubs can help relieve cough and congestion. Make sure to choose one specifically for babies and consult with your pediatrician.
Positioning: Keep your baby in an upright position while feeding or when they are awake. This helps prevent mucus from accumulating in the throat and chest.
Avoid Irritants: Make sure to keep the baby away from cigarette smoke or strong chemicals, as they can aggravate the cough.
Steam: If the cough is related to congestion, you can try sitting in the bathroom with hot water running to create steam. Hold your baby in your lap while they breathe in the warm, moist air.
If the cough persists for more than a week, or if it’s accompanied by other symptoms like wheezing, fever, or difficulty breathing, it’s important to consult your pediatrician for further evaluation and treatment.
