POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy9 months agoA. It seems like your baby is experiencing a runny nose, cough, and possibly vomiting. It's common for babies to resist medication, but there are a few gentle ways to help relieve these symptoms without medication:
For a Runny Nose:
1. Saline Nasal Drops/Spray: Use saline nasal drops to clear the mucus in your baby’s nose. You can buy these over-the-counter or make a saline solution at home.
2. Nasal Aspirator (Snot Sucker): After using saline drops, gently suction out the mucus using a nasal aspirator or a bulb syringe.
3. Humidifier: Use a humidifier in your baby's room to keep the air moist, which can help with congestion.
4. Steam: You can sit in a bathroom with the shower running hot to create steam, which can help loosen mucus in your baby’s nose and chest.
For Cough:
1. Honey (for babies over 1 year old): A small amount of honey can help soothe a cough. However, honey is not recommended for babies under 1 year due to the risk of botulism.
2. Warm Fluids: If your baby is old enough, offer warm water, warm breast milk, or formula to soothe the throat.
3. Elevate Head: When your baby sleeps, you can slightly elevate their head with a pillow or rolled towel under their mattress to help with congestion.
For Vomiting:
Small, Frequent Feedings: If your baby is vomiting, try offering smaller, more frequent feedings rather than large amounts of milk at once. This can reduce the chances of vomiting.
Avoid Overfeeding: Overfeeding can make the vomiting worse. Stick to regular feeding schedules and keep things light.
Monitor Hydration: Ensure your baby stays hydrated by offering breast milk or formula regularly, and watch for signs of dehydration like dry mouth, fewer wet diapers, or lethargy.
When to See a Doctor:
If your baby’s symptoms persist for more than a few days or worsen (e.g., fever, difficulty breathing, or severe vomiting), or if they are not drinking fluids and showing signs of dehydration, it is best to contact a pediatrician.
Your pediatrician might recommend other treatments or look for an underlying condition that could be causing the cough and runny nose.
