POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy8 months agoA. It's quite common for newborns to spit up milk after feeding, and this doesn't usually indicate a problem. Here's why it happens and some tips on managing it:
Why does it happen?
1. Immature Digestive System: Newborns have an immature digestive system, and their stomachs are small. Spitting up is a natural way of releasing excess milk or air trapped in the stomach.
2. Overfeeding or Fast Feeding: Sometimes, babies drink too much milk in one go or feed too quickly, causing them to spit up. If the milk flows too fast or the baby swallows too much air, it can lead to spitting.
3. Position During or After Feeding: If the baby is lying down or not kept upright for long enough after feeding, it can cause milk to come back up.
Is Spitting Milk Bad?
In most cases, a baby spitting up is not a cause for concern. It doesn't mean they are not digesting the milk properly. It can just be a part of their development, especially around the first few months. However, if the spitting up becomes forceful (projectile vomiting), the baby is not gaining weight or seems in discomfort, or there are other signs like a fever, it's worth consulting your doctor.
Tips to reduce spitting up:
1. Feed in a semi-upright position: Hold your baby in a more upright position while feeding. This can help prevent milk from coming back up.
2. Smaller, more frequent feedings: If you're breastfeeding, try feeding your baby more frequently but for shorter durations to avoid overfeeding.
3. Burp after every few minutes of feeding: Try to burp the baby every 2-3 minutes during a feeding. Also, after feeding, hold your baby upright for 20-30 minutes before laying them down.
4. Avoid pressure on the stomach: Don’t tightly swaddle the baby after feeding or put pressure on the tummy.
As long as your baby is growing well, doesn't seem uncomfortable, and is generally happy, mild spitting is usually just a phase that they will grow out of. If you're concerned, it's always good to check with your pediatrician to rule out any issues like reflux or other digestive concerns.
