A. Feeding challenges with a three-month-old baby can be concerning. Here are some possible reasons why your baby might be refusing to feed while awake and how you can help: ### Possible Reasons: 1. **Distraction**: At three months, babies start becoming more aware of their surroundings and can get easily distracted during feedings. 2. **Discomfort**: Your baby might be experiencing discomfort due to gas, teething, or other factors. 3. **Nipple Preference**: If you’ve been using a bottle, your baby might develop a preference for the bottle over the breast. 4. **Reflux**: Some babies with reflux find it uncomfortable to feed while awake. 5. **Latching Issues**: There might be a problem with the latch that makes feeding uncomfortable for your baby. ### Tips to Help: 1. **Create a Calm Environment**: Try to feed in a quiet, dimly lit room to minimize distractions. 2. **Comfort Feeding Positions**: Experiment with different breastfeeding positions to find one that your baby finds comfortable. 3. **Skin-to-Skin Contact**: Spend time doing skin-to-skin contact. This can help your baby feel more comfortable and may encourage feeding. 4. **Burping**: Ensure your baby is burped well before and during feeds to reduce discomfort from gas. 5. **Check for Reflux**: If you suspect reflux, consult your pediatrician. They can provide guidance and possible treatment options. 6. **Nipple Confusion**: If your baby is used to a bottle, try to make the transition to breastfeeding smoother by mimicking the flow and feel of breastfeeding. 7. **Seek Support**: A lactation consultant can provide personalized advice and techniques to help with breastfeeding challenges. ### When to Seek Help: If your baby continues to refuse to feed while awake and it affects their feeding routine and weight gain, it's important to consult your pediatrician or a lactation consultant for further evaluation and support. They can help identify any underlying issues and provide guidance tailored to your situation.
