HomeQuestions & Answershello Dr. hemendra Gupta,
I have very serious issue - breast feeding. my baby is 28 days old. I was trying from day 4-5 but then he was not taking properly so my family members said his mouth is small and mouth of my nipple is big that's why he is unable to take. still I was tried everyday and he started taking not more than 15 minutes in 24 hours a day. Problem is everybody including his nanny said I m not producing enough milk to fulfill his hunger that's why don't make him cry, so we r giving formula in bottle very often. whenever I try to feed Everytime he literally fights with me. till day before yesterday he was atleast taking for sometime. from yesterday he is not seeing only. please advise. ExpertShyamala SathiaseelanLactation Educator and Counselor5 years agoA. unless you actually weigh the baby you cannot say anything. Please use size zero nipple and do paced bottle feeding..Also express between feeds and use that instead if formula..Watch how to increase breast milk supply physically by Health Spoken Tutorial of IIT mumbai in youtube

ExpertShyamala SathiaseelanLactation Educator and Counselor5 years agoA. Dear Mamma, stop listening to others and meet a Lactation consultant immediately.. Please stop using bottles and pump your milk and give using a spoon. Dear Mamma, why do you think your supply is low? Baby crying constantly, baby wanting to feed constantly, breasts feeling soft, breasts not leaking, not enough coming out when pumping are not indicators of supply.Every mother has colostrum from the time she is 12 weeks pregnant unless there is a medical condition. The more the baby sucks in the initial stages, the quicker the more mature milk comes in and the brain gets a signal to produce more. Breastfeeding works on a demand and supply basis. The more you feed the more your body will produce. As long as the baby has a pee count of six-plus in twenty-four hours then your baby is getting enough.During the early months, the baby cluster feeds (more feeding in the evening), there are growth spurts and sleep regressions and none of this is a sign of low supply. Your body automatically adjusts to baby's demand. Please provide plenty of skin to skin and unrestricted access to the breast and latch baby on frequently. Listen to soothing music, smell baby's clothes, holding baby will all help in releasing milk. Also try hot water fomentation, massage of upper back and breast massage is also a way to help If you want/have to feed formula, always latch baby on first before offering the bottle. Please offer side A, wait for baby to unlatch on his or her own then burp baby and offer the same side, if baby refuses then offer side B, if baby accepts then repeat the whole process till baby refuses both breasts and then offer the bottle - but remember to use slowest flow nipple (size zero) and do paced bottle feeding - this way both your supply will increase and also you are slowly reducing formula and increasing breast milk. Please do breast compression while breastfeeding. Baby should be fed 10-12 times in 24 hours, night feeding of 3-4 times is also important. Do not wait for baby to get very hungry, look for early hunger cues. You can also hand express after feeding and that can help too. Expressing milk between feeds also helps. Swallowing a spoonful of raw methi seeds every day also helps, Please keep yourself well hydrated. If you do want to give a top-up, avoid formula and give expressed milk using a spoon. And if you do want to use a bottle then please use the slowest flow nipple and follow paced bottle feeding so that baby does not go through nipple preference/ confusion.Do talk to a lactation consultant if needed.Do you hear your baby suck and swallow? Do you think there is a latch problem, in that case, check out Nipple Flipple technique on YouTube and also Health Spoken Tutorial - IIT Bombay for cross cradle latch and other useful videos that can help you.

Ambily SrijithMom of a 6 yr 5 m old girl5 years agoA. Hi..maybe the milk quantity is less..please try having ‘Mamolac’ its a supplement to produce breastmilk. It was suggested by my Gynecologist and it worked for me. And continuously try breastfeeding the baby.even my baby had to be formula fed as my milk was not sufficient for him until 30 days. Try having the powder and once the milk quantity starts increasing always try and breastfeed the baby..

Meera RamachandranMom of a 6 yr old girl5 years agoA. 1st thing you need to accept is that all these are normal, you are not at fault for any of these. Keep trying dear. Thats what mothers are blessed with along with the baby. Dont feel discouraged. Baby refusing breast is breast aversion, it may occur due to nipple confusion that I had earlier mentioned or due to forcing the baby to feed keeping all the tensions and negativity that you are right now surrounded by. To eliminate nipple confusion dont bottle feed, use bowl and spoon. Initially it will be tough since baby got used to bottle and does not have patience to wait till you carry the next spoonful from the bowl to his mouth but slowly he will understand and get used to it. About forcefully feeding try to calm your baby if he gets too upset and try to feed your baby when he shows signs of hunger and just before he starts crying, they are more patient at that time. If possible take your baby to another room and ask your parents or nanny to not enter till you call them, and then feed. This will give you time with your baby and keep all the negative talks and thoughts away keeping you calm and happy at the moment. Do not stress as it will affect your milk and babies are magnetic to mothers emotions. Keep having milk boosting foods in your diet. And it would be a good idea to consult a lacto specialist and if possible let the doctor talk to your family too.

Author of questionMom of a 5 yr 11 m old child5 years agoA. Thank you very much ma'am. definitely your response is very useful for me and Mom like me. Actually problem is my baby weight (born) was 2.5 kg and now when he is 29 days old looks very malnourished. So everyone thinking he is not getting enough food. And scolding me to increase formula milk as they are saying my breast milk flow/supply is very slow. This is also correct that my baby refuse to take breast milk like hell. He just push my breast with his hand and cry cry a lot. Very tough situation for me, if I m trying for one hour, he also cry for one hour. I will definitely follow your advise. 🙏

Meera RamachandranMom of a 6 yr old girl5 years agoA. Hi dear, dont worry, Your baby is just 1 month old. Some women take more time to produce milk full fledged. Its a biological change and not your fault. All you can do is have proper diet, DONT TAKE STRESS and try lacto-booster food items. If possible avoid a bottle, because babies fall into nipple confusion fue to breast nipple and bottle nipple difference. Try a bowl and spoon technique for your formula. Buy yourself a breast pump and pump your milk at regular intervals of 2 or 3 hours. Your milk will gradually increase. Your parents and nanny may be right about your milk production but try requesting them to motivate and encourage you rather than stressing you. If the encourage you your mind will understand that this happens and it will get better. That will help increase your supply. Try all the methods and if you still find it difficult to feed yoir prince you should consult a lacto-specialist and nutritionist. Be patient, its normal.
