A. Between the ages of 12 to 24 months, it's generally considered safe to start transitioning a child from formula to whole cow's milk. However, it's important to note a few guidelines: 1. **Whole Cow's Milk:** At around 12 months, you can begin introducing whole cow's milk. It provides essential fats for brain development. 2. **Limit Quantity:** While cow's milk can be introduced, it shouldn't replace breast milk or formula entirely. Limit milk intake to about 16 to 24 ounces per day to ensure your child gets a variety of nutrients from other foods. 3. **Formula Transition:** Gradually transition from formula to cow's milk rather than abruptly switching. This allows your child's digestive system to adjust. 4. **Consult Your Pediatrician:** Always consult your pediatrician before making significant changes to your child's diet. They can provide personalized advice based on your child's health, growth, and development. 5. **Kidney Concerns:** In general, cow's milk is not harmful to a child's kidneys if given in appropriate quantities. However, excessive milk consumption can potentially lead to iron deficiency, as it may interfere with the absorption of iron from other foods. 6. **Balanced Diet:** Ensure your 18-month-old continues to receive a balanced diet with a variety of foods, including fruits, vegetables, grains, and protein sources. Remember that every child is unique, and individual dietary needs can vary. It's crucial to follow the guidance of your pediatrician to ensure that your child is receiving the appropriate nutrition for their age and development.
