A. Hair loss in a 5-month-old baby can be normal. Many babies experience hair loss in the first six months of life, known as neonatal hair loss. Here are some reasons why this might be happening: ### Common Causes of Hair Loss in Babies: 1. **Hormonal Changes:** Babies experience a drop in hormone levels after birth, which can lead to hair loss. 2. **Rubbing:** Babies often lose hair on the back of their heads from rubbing against mattresses, car seats, or other surfaces. 3. **Telogen Effluvium:** This is a condition where hair follicles enter a resting phase and then shed. It can be triggered by the stress of birth or other factors. ### What You Can Do: 1. **Gentle Hair Care:** Use a gentle baby shampoo and avoid over-washing your baby's hair. 2. **Soft Bedding:** Ensure your baby’s bedding is soft to reduce friction. 3. **Tummy Time:** Encourage tummy time when your baby is awake and supervised. This can reduce the time spent lying on their back and help with overall development. 4. **Balanced Nutrition:** If your baby has started on solids, ensure they are getting a balanced diet. ### When to Consult a Doctor: While hair loss is usually normal, if you notice other symptoms like redness, scaling, or patches of hair loss, or if the hair loss seems excessive, it’s a good idea to consult your pediatrician to rule out any underlying conditions. Most babies' hair will grow back over time, so try not to worry too much. If you have any concerns, your pediatrician can provide reassurance and guidance.
