Q.

Hello Doctor, My 1.5 year son had a very high fever today around 39.8 C and he has vomited some 4 times already. I had given calpol 5ml around 11 PM and he was feeling better. But now the fever has returned and he is shivering a bit. I am planning to give calpol dose again at 4 Am. Is it ok or i need to give dose at 5 AM. Please suggest

A. Fever is a reaction of the body to different pyrogens released during any Infection. Usually temp more than 99 F is taken as fever . Mostly in children fever is because of viral infections like flu or RSV where the fever is there for 4-5 days but may persist even upto 2 weeks . Initially antipyretic like paracetamol is given in a dose of 15 mg / kg/ dose. Can be repeated after 4-6 hrs if needed .h Lukewarm sponge bath can be given as home remgedy to decrease fever. Adequate fluid intake is also beneficial. Urine output monitoring is necessary to avoid dehydration .
