A. Knowing when a 7-day-old baby is full can be challenging, but there are several signs to look for: ### Signs Your Baby is Full 1. **Releases the Breast:** If your baby pulls away from the breast on their own, it's a good indication they are full. 2. **Slows Down Suckling:** A decrease in the speed and strength of suckling usually suggests the baby is nearing fullness. 3. **Hands Open and Relaxed:** When babies are hungry, they often clench their fists. When they are full, their hands open and relax. 4. **Appears Content:** A full baby will appear relaxed, satisfied, and possibly sleepy. 5. **Burps:** Often, babies will burp when they are full. 6. **Stops Swallowing:** If you notice a pause in swallowing, it can mean the baby is done feeding. ### Breastfeeding Duration A feeding session can vary widely among infants. For a newborn, feeding for 10 minutes can be normal, especially if they are an efficient eater. Babies typically need 8-12 feedings per day during the first few weeks [[❞]](https://www.firstcry.com/). Here are some additional points to consider: - **Milk Supply:** Ensure that your baby is getting enough milk. If they are gaining weight adequately and having 6-8 wet diapers a day, they are likely getting enough milk [[❞]](https://www.firstcry.com/). - **Growth Spurts:** Sometimes, babies may feed more or less during growth spurts or when they are not feeling well. ### Ensuring Adequate Nutrition - **Frequent Feedings:** Offer the breast every 2-3 hours or whenever the baby shows hunger cues like rooting, sucking on hands, or fussiness. - **Track Diapers:** Keep track of wet and soiled diapers. This is a good indicator of whether your baby is getting enough milk. ### When to Seek Help If you're ever in doubt or if your baby: - Is not gaining weight. - Has fewer than 6 wet diapers a day. - Seems constantly hungry or unsatisfied after feeding. Contact your pediatrician or a lactation consultant for advice. ### Additional Resources - [La Leche League](https://www.llli.org) offers support and information for breastfeeding mothers. - [American Academy of Pediatrics](https://www.aap.org) provides guidelines and resources on infant feeding and care.
