Q.

#asktheexperts My son is 15 months old. He used to soothe himself to sleep through thumb sucking. Two days back, while I was cutting his nails his thumb got minor scratch on it. Ever since then, he is not interested in sucking his thumb. Is this behaviour normal? Will he get back to his thumbsucking?

A. Thumb sucking in infants is a very normal phenomenon and its called mouthing reflex and nothing to be worried about it just to maintain proper hygiene and with time this thing will go . In the toddlers thumb sucking habit is also seen many a times which could be phycological cause and feeling of insecurity or some stress . Just try to make the child comfortable and divert in some activities also spend good time with the child . In extreme case withdrawal can be tried with some solution available which are bitter like femite lotion . It needs to be applied locally .

A. Yes it’s a normal behaviour maybe child is feeling that skill which is missing or maybe when the child sucked child may have felt a little bit of that may have gone into the mouth and it is not interesting so all in all it’s a very good thing that your child has gotten rid of this awful habit that a child got into
