HomeQuestions & Answers#asktheexperts Hi
My baby is following a new sleeping pattern these days.
She demands feed every hour from 11 pm to 2 am and sleeps at 2*30 am. However, then she sleeps at a stretch for 6-7 hours and is reluctant to get fed in between. She is 1.5 months old. Is this ok? Should she be fed every 2-3 hours or on demand?

A. For a 1.5-month-old baby, feeding on demand is generally recommended. Here's why and how you can approach it:
### **Feeding Recommendations:**
1. **Feed on Demand:**
- **Responsive Feeding:** Allow your baby to feed whenever they show signs of hunger. This usually means feeding every 2-3 hours, but it can vary. Look for cues like rooting, sucking on their hands, or fussiness.
2. **Flexible Schedule:**
- **Adaptability:** At this age, babies often have irregular feeding patterns. Some may need to feed more frequently, especially during growth spurts, while others may go a bit longer between feedings.
3. **Ensure Adequate Intake:**
- **Weight Gain:** Monitor your baby's weight gain and overall growth, as these are good indicators of whether they are getting enough milk. Regular check-ups with your pediatrician can help ensure this.
4. **Breastfeeding Tips:**
- **Latch and Position:** Ensure your baby has a good latch and is positioned comfortably for effective breastfeeding. This can help with milk transfer and make feedings more efficient.
5. **Formula Feeding:**
- **Follow Guidelines:** If you are formula feeding, follow the instructions on the formula packaging and consult your pediatrician about the appropriate amount and frequency.
### **General Advice:**
- **Trust Your Baby’s Signals:** Babies have varying appetites, and their needs can change daily. Responding to their hunger cues rather than sticking strictly to a set schedule often leads to better feeding experiences for both mother and baby.
- **Consult Your Pediatrician:** If you have concerns about feeding patterns or if your baby seems consistently hungry or unsatisfied, discuss it with your pediatrician. They can provide guidance based on your baby's specific needs and growth.
Feeding on demand supports your baby's natural hunger signals and promotes healthy growth and development.
