A. At 5 months and 4 days old, it's generally a good time to begin introducing solids (like pureed fruits, vegetables, or rice cereal) to your baby, as most babies start to show signs of readiness around 5 to 6 months. Signs of readiness include the ability to hold their head up steadily, show interest in food, and have good control over their tongue (not pushing food out). Breast milk or formula should remain the primary source of nutrition during the first year, with solids being introduced gradually.
If you’re considering introducing solids, start with single-ingredient purees such as mashed banana, pureed apple, sweet potato, or rice cereal (mixed with breast milk or formula to adjust the consistency). You can offer one new food at a time and wait 3-5 days before introducing a new food to monitor for any allergic reactions. Be sure to continue breastfeeding or formula feeding as the main source of nourishment for your baby during this phase. Always check with your pediatrician before introducing solids to make sure your baby is ready.
