A. I'm sorry to hear that your son isn't feeling well. While teething can sometimes cause mild discomfort, irritability, and a slight increase in temperature, it usually doesn't cause high fever (101°F/38.3°C or higher) or diarrhea. Here are some possible reasons for his symptoms: ### Potential Causes 1. **Infection**: - **Viral or Bacterial Infection**: Diarrhea and fever are common symptoms of infections. Rotavirus and norovirus can cause severe diarrhea in infants. - **Ear Infection**: Can cause fever and discomfort. 2. **Teething**: - **Teething Symptoms**: Can include mild fever, irritability, drooling, and gum swelling. However, teething alone typically does not cause high fever or severe diarrhea. 3. **Dehydration**: - Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, which can cause fever and lethargy. 4. **Other Illnesses**: - There could be other underlying illnesses causing these symptoms. ### What to Do 1. **Monitor Symptoms**: - Keep track of your son's temperature, bowel movements, and any other symptoms. 2. **Hydration**: - Ensure he is getting plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration. Offer breast milk or formula frequently, and consider offering small amounts of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) if recommended by your doctor. 3. **Comfort Measures**: - Keep him comfortable with cool, damp cloths and ensure he is dressed in light clothing. 4. **Seek Medical Advice**: - Since your son has had prolonged symptoms, it's important to consult a pediatrician. A doctor can determine if further evaluation or treatment is needed. 5. **Teething Relief**: - If teething is contributing to his discomfort, you can offer a chilled teething ring or gentle gum massage. ### When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention - If the fever persists for more than a few days or is very high. - If your son shows signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears when crying, significantly fewer wet diapers). - If he is unusually lethargic or unresponsive. - If there is blood in his stool or vomit. - If he has difficulty breathing. ### Conclusion While teething can cause some discomfort, it usually doesn't result in high fever or severe diarrhea. It's crucial to consult your pediatrician to identify the exact cause and receive appropriate treatment.
