A. Constipation when starting solids is fairly common in babies. Here are some steps to help manage and prevent it: 1. Increase Fiber Intake: Offer high-fiber foods like pureed prunes, pears, apples, and peas. These can help stimulate bowel movements. 2. Ensure Adequate Fluids: Make sure she is drinking enough fluids. In addition to breast milk or formula, you can offer small amounts of water. 3. Gradual Introduction of Solids: Introduce new solids gradually and monitor her response. Start with easy-to-digest foods like rice cereal, then slowly add fruits and vegetables. 4. Include a Variety of Foods: Incorporate a mix of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to provide dietary fiber and aid digestion. 5. Tummy Time and Movement: Encourage tummy time and gentle movements to help stimulate digestion. 6. Monitor and Adjust: If the constipation persists or causes significant discomfort, consult with your pediatrician. They might suggest a gentle stool softener or other solutions. Duration: Constipation related to starting solids can last a few weeks as her digestive system adjusts to the new diet. If it continues beyond this or causes severe discomfort, it's important to seek medical advice. If her sleeping patterns are disrupted due to constipation, addressing the issue with these tips should help improve her comfort and sleep.
