#AskTheExpert My 4 year old daughter has had a cough for a long time now..ever since she started school this year. She spits out phlegm too sometimes. The cough gets worse at night. We have given different medicines...long courses of some too. We have tried steam inhaling too. But nothing seems to help her get over this cough completely.

Dr Sameer awadhiyaGuardian of 2 children2 years agoA. Cough along with Cold most of the time is a viral illness and it needs supportive care along with proper hydration. you can give steam inhalation which is very useful .
cough needs to be treated with anti allergic and expectorant bronchodilators or antitugissives medicine which should be given only after a proper evaluation by the doctor according to the type of cough.
if fever is there paracetamol can be given to reduce the fever and the dose can be refpeated after 6 hours again if required .
