ExpertDr. Minal AcharyaNutritionist2 years agoA. dear parent, weaning of breastfeeding should be done gradually so as to make it less stressful for you and your baby. Ensure that the child eats enough; increase the number of meals.
Increase interval between breastfeeds. Drop one feed every day per week. Taper over 2-3 mo.
Stop morning breastfeeds first, then afternoon feeds after 2 - 3 weeks. Avoid situations that remind the baby of the breast: other family members and father can help with feeding and putting child to sleep.
The nighttime feeding is usually the last to go. Make a bedtime routine not centered around breastfeeding. read a good book which may eventually become more important than a long session at the breast , rub child's back, sing lullaby. Your child may agree to rest his head on your breast instead of feeding. Talk to your child about what's going on.
