#asktheexpert Hi Doctor, my son have colostomy when he was 10 days old and still on, we were asked to have the closure surgery after 6 months, why it's been carried out after 6 months and what's the requirements for the closure of colostomy? with respect, Alosh

A. The closure of the stoma in the belly is done with sutures (stitches). The stitches stay under the skin and go away on their own as the incision heals. This means the doctor will not need to remove them. When your child starts passing stool, the stool is usually liquid.
