Q.

#asktheexpert Hello, My baby is experiencing colic every night and is straining while passing gas. whole night he does not sleep... he is breastfeeding well and sleeps during the day, but at night he is restless and cannot sleep at all. Please help as doctor prescribed colic aid drops but they do not seem to work as well. I'm also unable to sleep and am afraid might fall sick because of lack of sleep.

A. It's common for a one-month-old baby to experience colic, which typically involves excessive crying or fussiness, especially during the evening hours. Colic is thought to be linked to the immature digestive system, and while it's distressing for both the baby and the parents, it's usually a phase that improves with time. To help soothe your baby, you can try feeding in an upright position to reduce the swallowing of air, ensuring that you burp your baby well after each feed. Gentle tummy massages or placing your baby on their tummy (while supervised) may also help relieve gas and discomfort. A warm bath can be soothing for your baby and may help calm them down. Using a calming routine, such as swaddling or offering a pacifier, can also provide comfort. Additionally, using white noise or soft lullabies can help create a soothing environment. If the colic symptoms are persistent or if you're concerned about your baby's well-being, it's important to consult with a pediatrician to rule out any other potential causes and get personalized advice.
