A. It’s not uncommon for some children to understand language but not speak as much at the age of 3. Every child develops at their own pace, but if your son is understanding everything and responding appropriately, that’s a positive sign. However, if you're concerned about his speech development, here are a few steps you can take: 1. Encourage Communication: Talk to him regularly: Engage in conversations with him, even if he doesn’t respond with words. Encourage him to use gestures, sounds, or other forms of communication. Read to him: Reading books together is one of the best ways to expose him to new vocabulary and sentence structures. Encourage him to point to pictures or repeat words after you. Sing songs: Singing simple songs and rhymes can help improve his verbal skills and memory. 2. Limit Screen Time: Ensure that his exposure to screen time (TV, tablets, etc.) is limited. Interactive play and face-to-face communication are far more effective for language development. 3. Model Language: Use simple sentences and pause to give him time to respond. Encourage him by repeating what he says correctly if he tries to communicate in any way, even with sounds or gestures. 4. Encourage Play with Other Children: Social interaction with peers can help stimulate speech. Playing with other children helps in learning new words and how to communicate. 5. Consult a Pediatrician: If his speech doesn’t improve or if you have concerns, consider consulting a pediatrician or a speech-language pathologist (SLP). They can assess his speech development and offer tailored advice or therapy if necessary. Some children may take a little longer to start speaking, but as long as they are making progress and are able to understand language, it’s often just a matter of time. A professional evaluation can help ease concerns and guide next steps.
