When your baby puts a finger in their mouth, it’s usually a normal way for them to explore, soothe themselves, or even try to communicate that they’re tired, hungry, or need comfort. At a few months old, babies don’t “say” words but express needs through actions like sucking or finger sucking. So, it’s their way of telling you they want something—maybe comfort, food, or just to feel secure. If you notice it happening often when they’re fussy or sleepy, it’s a sign they’re self-soothing.
