POOJA KOTHARIMom of a 8 yr 5 m old boy4 months agoA. An elongated head at birth is usually normal, especially if the baby was delivered vaginally. This condition is called "molding", and it happens because the baby’s soft skull bones shift slightly to pass through the birth canal. In most cases, the shape naturally becomes more rounded within a few weeks.
When to be reassured: Baby is feeding well and growing normally No bulging or sunken soft spot (fontanelle) No signs of pain or discomfort Head shape is improving gradually on its own What you can do: Give tummy time daily (under supervision) Change baby’s head position while sleeping (right to left) Avoid keeping baby in the same lying position all the time When to see a doctor: Head remains misshaped beyond 2–3 months Baby’s soft spot feels abnormal Head size isn’t growing with age You notice flat spots or the baby avoids turning the head
But overall, elongated head at birth is common and usually harmless. If you’re ever unsure, a pediatrician can monitor it during routine checkups.
