A. Nasal congestion is common in newborns and infants due to their tiny nasal passages, which can easily become blocked. Here’s how you can manage a nasal block for your 2-month-old: --- Causes of Nasal Blockage: 1. Normal Newborn Congestion: Babies often have nasal congestion due to narrow nasal passages. 2. Dry Air: Low humidity can cause the nasal passages to dry out. 3. Colds or Infections: Viral infections may cause a stuffy nose. 4. Allergies or Irritants: Dust, strong odors, or smoke can irritate the baby's nose. --- Home Remedies and Care: 1. Use Saline Drops: How: Use baby-safe saline nasal drops (available over the counter). Place 1-2 drops in each nostril and wait a few minutes to loosen mucus. 2. Nasal Suction: Use a bulb syringe or a nasal aspirator to gently remove mucus. Be gentle and don’t overuse, as it may irritate the nasal lining. 3. Humidifier: Use a cool-mist humidifier in the baby’s room to keep the air moist, especially in dry climates or during winter. 4. Steam Inhalation: Sit in a steamy bathroom with the baby (do not expose directly to hot steam) for 10-15 minutes to help loosen nasal mucus. 5. Elevate the Head Slightly: When sleeping, slightly elevate the baby's head by placing a folded towel under the crib mattress (never directly under the baby) to improve drainage. 6. Breastfeeding: Frequent breastfeeding helps keep your baby hydrated and can thin mucus. 7. Avoid Irritants: Keep the baby away from smoke, dust, and strong smells. --- When to See a Doctor: If nasal congestion interferes with feeding or sleeping. If the baby has difficulty breathing or is breathing noisily even at rest. If there is fever, green or yellow nasal discharge, or signs of infection. If the congestion persists for more than a week.
