Q.

#askthedoctor can a 5 month plus baby sleep at night without breast feed. My baby suck her finger in sleep and I feel she is hungry and sometimes she takes the feed, sometimes does not take the feed. I am really confused how to know if baby is actually hungry while in sleep.

A. in first six months the minimum weight gain should be 500 mg per month and it can go up to 1 kg per month also. the urine output should be more than 6 to 7 times per day. the child should sleep after taking feeding. meet the doctor for weight assessment. if the above criteria is achieved then the child is having adequate milk intake. if the growth of the child is proper there is no need to worry about the sleeping pattern/ feeding as well as the stool frequency of the child finger, thumb, hand, things insertion in the oral cavity is very normal at this stage and usually it is due to teething pain the child is experiencing along with inflammation and pain in the gums. just maintain hygiene of the child finger as well as any type of things which goes inside the oral cavity and also try to maintain the hygiene of your finger when you are touching the hands of the child. to decrease the cteething pain you can press the gums of the child and if the child is very irritable and crying for pain you can give paracetamol also. it is a self limiting habit and no treatment is required.

A. Its Very normal habit for a child to keep a finger and thumb into the mouth it necessarily does not mean that every time your child is hungry so if you’re feeding and your child is taking a feed that and then its okay otherwise you should wait if your child cries then only you feed the child otherwise you should
