I was told by my paediatrician to feed the baby atleast every two hours and not wait for him to cry. I did that for the first 4 months religiously, setting alarm and all. My baby was a deep sleeper and slept most of the time, so I was told to wake him by tickling his ear or feet and nurse him. It was very hard for me initially as I was constantly sleep deprived but after 3 months I learned to nurse in the side position, so I could catch a nap at times and it was also easier on my back. I have to state thought that there is a risk of suffocating the baby if the mother falls asleep while nursing in side position, so one has to be careful about it. My baby is 2 and half years old and I still nurse him in side position every night, whenever he is fussing in sleep.
